Milwaukee Succeeds post-secondary goal is advancing efforts to increase career/college access & success by building a strong foundation for partners to communicate, collaborate, and coordinate their resources, knowledge, and programming to support increased degree attainment. A high school diploma is no longer sufficient as a terminal degree. A post-secondary credential is in greater demand than ever before; and by 2020, 65 percent of U.S. jobs will require some form of post-secondary education. However, due to a leaky educational pipeline too many students fail to complete high school and make a successful transition to post-secondary education and careers. Post-secondary success refers to completion of a post-secondary credential. Often regarded as referring to bachelor’s and associate’s degrees, post-secondary credential encompasses a broader range of programs that students may complete after high school. These include certificates, diplomas, apprenticeships, licenses and workforce readiness certifications.

Current focal areas and strategies of the Access & Success Network include:

  • Post-Secondary Preparation: Students must build awareness and aspirations early about post-secondary options, including college and careers.
    • Supporting Academic Career Planning Implementation: Also known as individual learning plans or individual graduation plans, these student-driven planning, and monitoring tools help students create programs of study that are aligned with high school graduation requirements, personal interests, and individually-defined career goals. Beginning in 2017-18, every 6-12 grader will be required to have a plan. And we are exploring how we can help partners to effectively implement this requirement.
  • Transition into Post-Secondary: Students must acquire the college knowledge and skills necessary to transition into post-secondary pathways.
    • Increasing College Affordability: FAFSA: Every year, the federal government provides more than $150 billion in financial aid (grants, work-study, and loans) for college or career school. This application not only gives students access to the aid; it also allows students and families to find a better path toward college affordability and earning a degree.
    • Reducing “Summer Melt”: Across the country, 10-40% of seemingly college-intending students, particularly those from low-income backgrounds, fail to enroll in college the fall after graduation. This phenomenon is known as summer melt. We are considering ways to engage our partners to increase communication and bridges between High School and Institutions of Higher Education (IHEs).
  • Post-Secondary Success: Students must enroll, persist and successfully complete a post-secondary education program of study.
    • Reducing Math Remediation: we have focused on the tactic of reducing the number of students in remediation. By partnering with M3, we have supported a summer math support program for entering freshmen to upgrade math skills and avoid remedial placement. We know successful completion of math remediation in a student’s first year increases the likelihood that the student will successfully complete a degree within 6 years by nearly a factor of 4.
