What do you think of when you hear the word “Tableau?”
I hope everyone is staying warm in this wonderful Wisconsin weather! I want to ask everyone a question. Quick multiple choice quiz: What do you think of when you hear the word “Tableau?”
The latest board game sure to fly off the shelves this holiday season.
An obscure astrological sign.
A unique data visualization software tool.
You guessed it – C! Tableau was designed to process and analyze data in a logical, easy to follow manner. Have you checked out the Milwaukee Succeeds website? If not, there are some exciting things happening at milwaukeesucceeds.org. When you take a look at the website, and particularly the impact section, you will experience how we use Tableau. Tableau allows us to present and clarify data points with one or two clicks. This week our Impact Manager, Lorna Dilley is going to share with us how Tableau software is helping us illustrate how we are moving the needle in education for our children.
Take it away Lorna! See you soon, Danae
I’m really excited about how Tableau software can help us see and understand data by transforming it into aesthetically appealing, interactive visualizations!
Milwaukee Succeeds is committed to systems change. Improving the use of data to drive continuous improvement, both internal and external, is a significant piece of that commitment. And in our efforts to create a culture of data-driven discussions with our partners, Tableau will serve as a robust tool to customize data in a way that engages partners and builds on our progress to help move the work forward.
The Tableau Fellowship, that I am happy to receive, will help our community more effectively view, analyze, and share local education data. StriveTogether and the Tableau Foundation will support 17 cradle-to-career partnerships selected for the second cohort of Tableau Fellowships. Tableau will support the fellowship program through June 2017 with software, funding, and training. Participants will work with Tableau experts from the field and connect with each other through an online portal space and discussion forum.
If you visit the Impact section of our website, you’ll see that we’ve already begun exploring the possibilities of Tableau! Check out the interactive features that allow you to drill down data points with a few clicks! With this training, we aim to expand our use of Tableau to display data beyond our core indicators – including contributing indicators as well as many of the (non-academic) contextual factors that underscore inequity in educational outcomes, such as poverty, income disparities, and unemployment. We’ll also use Tableau to enhance data use within networks and their member partners.
So board games and astrological signs all to the good – but keep an eye on the Milwaukee Succeeds website to see what the cool world of “data viz” can offer! Many thanks to StriveTogether and the Tableau Foundation for this great opportunity.
